BMI Calculator: How to Know if Your Weight is Healthy
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used tool in the world to assess whether your weight falls within a healthy range. While it has limitations, it remains the first indicator used by doctors and nutritionists.
What is BMI?
BMI is a number calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). For example, a person weighing 75 kg and 1.75 m tall would have a BMI of 75 ÷ (1.75²) = 24.5.
WHO Classification
Underweight: BMI below 18.5
Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
Obesity class I: BMI between 30 and 34.9
Obesity class II: BMI between 35 and 39.9
Obesity class III: BMI of 40 or above
BMI Limitations
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and fat. A bodybuilder with lots of muscle can have an "obese" BMI without having excess fat. That's why it's recommended to complement it with other measurements like body fat percentage or waist circumference.
